My First Note-Reading Book with its companion CD can be used parallel to the Suzuki Violin School, the lesson books Step by Step or with any other violin school. It leads young violinists, step by step and in a playful manner, through the basics of reading music and sight reading. Learning goals include:

1. Command of basic rhythms
2. Learning all tones on all strings in the first finger-pattern

1. Speach, clapping and motion games In the first part of the book, elementary note values are introduced. All rhythms can be heard on the CD, played by drum and piano, and encourage the children to take up the pulse in a lively manner. Rhythms introduced here form the foundation for all following chapters.

 

 

2. Drawing games, writing games, brain teasers Appearing between the short, easily understood exercises are numerous drawing games, writing games and brain teasers. Not only entertaining, these are also an interesting way to introduce note-reading and note-writing. Solutions to the brain teasers can be found on the last two pages.

To give this book a personal touch, all of the drawings may be colored.

3. Note-reading exercises with and without the instrument All notes in the first finger-pattern will be introduced and systematically practiced in this book. Accidentals are always included where required, but their meaning will not be explained until the next book.

As students work through the exercises, the following practice variations are recommended to ensure that the notes in each five-tone group are thoroughly mastered:

a) Careful study of the short note sequence
b) Singing with a rhythm text
c) Singing with finger numbers
d) Singing with note names
e) Playing with pizzicato
f) Playing with the bow
g) Playing with the CD

The piano arrangements on the CD are purposefully kept simple so that students will not be distracted from learning the pitches. Every short exercise has an introduction of two measures which musically introduces the new concept to be learned.

4. Training in sight-reading After thoroughly working through the material, the student should gradually increase the number of tunes played with the CD in sequence until all forty-eight tunes can be played without interruption.

Alfred Author-Kerstin Wartberg

Kerstin Wartberg received her professional musical education at the Conservatory (Musikhochschule) of Cologne, earning violin performance and teaching degrees. After her graduation in Germany, she went to Japan for two years, where she was the first German to study at the Talent Education Institute in Matsumoto, Japan. She graduated in 1981. In 1982 she became the director of the teacher-training program at the German Suzuki Institute, a position that she continues to hold today.

Kerstin Wartberg regularly organizes string workshops, courses and concerts. In 1987, she was the Director of the 8th Suzuki Method International Conference at the International Congress Center Berlin, which boasted 4000 active participants from more than 32 different countries. She is in demand to teach and lecture worldwide at universities, conservatories, conferences, workshops and festivals.

In addition to teaching in public forums, Kerstin Wartberg is the author of several teaching books and CDs, including the Step by Step series of violin exercise books and companion CDs (published by Alfred Music Publishing Co.) and Recital Training (published by Edition Peters). She drafted these series, based on Dr. Suzuki’s Method, at the Talent Education Institute in Matsumoto, Japan between 1981 and 1986, where they were approved by Dr. Suzuki and tested by numerous Suzuki teachers, their students and parents. Step by Step and Recital Training represent a source of Dr. Suzuki’s instrumental concepts as well as specific instructions concerning the individual pieces, in both written and audio form. Many of the publications are available in German, English, French and Spanish.
